Check requirements before committing
Some incentives require preapproval, an approved contractor, a specific equipment directory, income verification, an audit, weatherization, disposal documentation, or submission within a limited period. A qualifying technology name does not guarantee that every model or installation qualifies.
Ask the contractor to place the incentive assumption and responsibility in writing. The contract should distinguish an instant discount from a rebate you must claim later and state what happens if the program denies the application.

Keep incentives separate from tax advice
Rebates, tax credits, and financing offers follow different rules. A contractor or calculator can identify questions, but only the program owner or an appropriate tax professional can confirm how your circumstances are treated.
Build your budget using the gross project price and a separate potential-incentive line until approval is dependable. Keep invoices, model numbers, certification documents, proof of payment, and program correspondence together.
