Equipment is only one part of the installed project
The visible equipment often dominates the proposal, but installation conditions can move cost and outcome just as much. A complete scope may include demolition, disposal, refrigerant piping, drainage, electrical protection, gas or venting work, sheet metal transitions, filtration, controls, permits, access protection, and startup testing.
Ask contractors to separate required work from optional improvements. This makes quotes easier to compare and prevents a useful add-on from disguising an incomplete base installation.

Existing conditions create legitimate variation
Tight access, an attic or roof location, obsolete wiring, deteriorated ducts, code corrections, asbestos procedures, and difficult condensate routing can increase labor and coordination. A contractor who identifies those conditions before signing may quote more than one who plans to address them later as extras.
Request allowances or unit prices for uncertain work. The contract should explain how discoveries are documented and approved before additional charges are incurred.

Commissioning belongs in the price
A new system should not be considered complete when it merely turns on. The contractor should verify airflow, controls, drainage, refrigerant or combustion operation as applicable, and the installed configuration required for the equipment. Ask what startup record you will receive.
The final payment schedule should align with completion, inspection, and delivery of warranty and permit documentation. Keep the proposal, approved changes, model and serial numbers, and startup results with your home records.
