Compare complete systems
A heat pump proposal may require a panel assessment, new circuit, condensate work, backup heat, or changes to ducts and controls. A furnace proposal may require venting, gas piping, combustion-air work, or chimney changes. Include those items before comparing installed prices.
Dual-fuel systems can retain a furnace for colder conditions while using a heat pump for cooling and moderate heating. That flexibility adds equipment and control complexity, so the proposal should state the switchover strategy and who will commission it.

Model energy cost with local inputs
Use your actual utility rates when possible, including fixed charges only when the project would eliminate an entire service. Compare realistic equipment efficiencies and a consistent heating load. Promotional savings claims are not a substitute for a transparent calculation.
Incentives can change the upfront comparison, but verify availability, eligible model lists, contractor requirements, and application timing before signing. A potential rebate should remain separate from guaranteed contract value until the program owner confirms it.
