Check the installation environment

Heat-pump water heaters need an appropriate location for air exchange, condensate drainage, noise, and temperature conditions. Gas equipment needs compliant fuel, venting, and combustion provisions. Tankless replacements may require larger gas piping, electrical work, vent changes, or water-treatment planning.

Measure the path into the space, not only the final footprint. Doorways, stairs, drain-pan clearance, service access, and the route for piping and wiring can eliminate an otherwise attractive option.

Compare ownership, not labels

Include installed price, expected energy use, maintenance requirements, warranty, potential service complexity, and incentives. A high-efficiency option can be financially sensible without being the best fit for every room or household.
